LEADERS ARE MINDFUL EACH DAY

As we move through the beginning of January, many leaders are focusing on their New Year’s resolutions and what they wish to accomplish in 2026. Some leaders break down those resolutions and attach them to timelines, creating goals for each quarter of the calendar year.

Still other leaders use their apps, their journals or their notebooks to formulate monthly goals for themselves and their team members.

These are all laudable leadership endeavors. They help move you and your teams forward toward the accomplishment of meaningful tasks and the completion of important projects.

What if, in addition to creating these significant goals, you also gave yourself permission to spend time each night or morning creating leadership goals for the next day or for that very day?

These daily goals can help you in several ways. They can help:

-with your desired leadership growth,

-with the creation and maintenance of strong relationships with your teammates,

-with the formulation of trustworthy relationships with peers and supervisors, and

-with the creation of an inclusive and powerful group culture.

Daily goals need not be all encompassing. They can be simple and yet powerful. They can start with you asking yourself daily questions that only you can answer:

-What are the most important accomplishments I can achieve today?

-Which of my teammates do I want to focus my attention on today?

-Which peers do I want to reach out to today?

-With whom do I want to build my working relationship today?

-What’s one significant thing I can do today to move me toward the completion of my biggest weekly or monthly goal?

-From whom can I seek feedback today about my own leadership, strengths and challenges?

-Which teammate seems to have been struggling and needs my support the most today?

-Who today will give me the most honest feedback about how I could be a better leader for him or her?

-What skill do I want to focus on strengthening today that will move me along on my leadership journey?

-What colleague at our organization with whom I have not communicated in a while do I want to reach out to today?

-What professional colleague at a sister organization do I wish to reach out to and check on today?

-What’s the most important question that I have for my own manager today?

-How can I make the biggest impact on my department today?

-What important question am I neglecting to ask that will help me have a terrific day?

These are all simple questions that we can ask ourselves in the evening as we plan for the next workday or in the morning after we arrive at our office or our work desk.

It all starts with curiosity.

Curiosity is a leader’s best friend. So each day, make sure to bring your curiosity mindset to work !
